ART APPRECIATION – (Ages 4-6)

This class is a perfect introduction for the young artist. Storytelling is combined with expression through art. Reference will be made to famous artists throughout history to assist in learning. Students will learn art basics including understanding of shapes and color, incorporating lessons into their creations. Various mediums will be used including pastels, paint and collage. DRAWING & PAINTING – Introduction – Advanced (Ages 7+)

Ages 7+ (or instructor permission). A focus on drawing and painting from observation and imagination, using pencil, charcoal, pastels and paint. Form, color, composition and perspective will be emphasized through stimulating and innovative projects. Advanced students should have the ability to develop projects over a 2-3 week period. NEW! PORTRAIT DRAWING MINI SESSION – Adults

Whether you are experienced or are new to drawing, this workshop is for you. Beginners will learn techniques to draw a successful portrait and experienced artists will be challenged to improve their skill set. Maximum 10 students per class.

Reference material will be provided by instructor.

Week 1- Introduction – Learning Techniques
An introduction to drawing and a demonstration of easily learned observational techniques and line drawing basics will be taught by Mr. Elsen Instructors’ critique will be given throughout the session.

Week 2- Shadows and Values
Concepts of shadows and values will be taught, with application to portrait art.

Week 3- Portrait and Gestural Renderings
Using provided reference photos, students will render some quick portrait and/or gesture drawings and further develop their observational skills. A drawing session will follow with critiques/assistance offered by instructor.

Week 4- Toned 3-D Portrait Rendering Students will complete a portrait drawing on toned paper using various charcoals They will be introduced to nuanced rendering techniques to create three-dimensional modeling.

CARTOONING – Ages 7-16 (All Levels)

This course offers traditional and contemporary forms of making cartoons. Children who are interested in cartooning techniques such as character design, comic strips and storytelling will learn hands-on drawing techniques. Project themes are student centered, giving the children a sense of control over what they learn and a resources to create unique works of art. Also included are studies of essential components of advanced animation including stop motion photography and cel development, used by Disney. Maximum 8 students per class.

Working digitally provides limitless options for artists. Students will take their art work to the next level, using accessible computer art programs to animate their work. Learn pinch, slab, and coil construction methods as well as the use of molds. Decorative treatments that will be utilized include stamps, stencils and silkscreen Students will glaze and finish their pieces using multiple glazing techniques. Sculptural, decorative, and functional possibilities in clay will be explored through brief demonstrations, class discussions, and individual consultations. Maximum 8 students per class.

Please Note: It is very common for students to repeat ballet levels in order to gain the proper and safe technique needed to advance.

BALLET – (Ages 5+)

BEGINNER BALLET (Age 5 / students entering kindergarten)

For students who have already taken primary ballet and Primary Ballet/Tap Classes and would like to continue to study ballet in a more formal atmosphere. In this 60-minute class, students will learn the basics of ballet technique. Students will also exercise simple skills to improve coordination and flexibility as well as to develop their musicality and memorization skills. Dress: Students must wear a pink leotard with pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Hair must be in a bun. No tutus or skirts. Maximum 8 students per class.

Pre-requisite: at least one year of ballet experience.
Building on the foundation students from Ballet 1/Ballet 2, these ballet classes focus on more advanced technique, posture, proper alignment, terminology, spatial orientation and expressive response to music as well as flexibility. Students must have some basic ballet knowledge. Dress: Black leotard, pink tights, skirt, and pink ballet slippers. Hair must be pulled back in a bun.  Maximum 8 students per class.

BASIC BEGINNER POINTE (Ages 11+)

This is a 30-minute class for students in Ballet 5 who are serious about ballet. Dancing on toe requires great strength in the legs and feet. All dancers must be formally evaluated by their ballet teacher to determine if they are physically ready to meet the demands of pointe work. To attend this class, students must be enrolled in or have completed Ballet 5. Dancers must bring their pointe shoes and accessories unsewn to the first day of pointe class to be checked by their teacher.  Dress: Black leotard with pink tights and black ballet skirt. Hair must be pulled back in a bun. Note: Choosing the correct pointe shoe is extremely important. Purchase dance shoes from a reputable dance shop to ensure proper fit. (No costume required for dance recital)

A progressive class where students will learn the fundamental building blocks to gymnastics technique. Focus will be on learning forward/backward rolls, cartwheels, round-offs, handstands, walkovers and more. Students will also work on their flexibility and strength. Students attending this class should already have an understanding and the ability to perform tumbles, cartwheels and other foundations of Acrobatics and tumbling. Students in level 2 will continue to evolve their flexibility and begin to work on partnering, elbow stands, chin stands, front and back walk overs as well as dive cartwheels and much much more! TECHNIQUE – (Ages 7+)

In this class students work on the fundamentals of dance which includes body placement, form, flexibility and coordination. Dancers will also be taught proper technique for a variety of turns and leaps and will continue to build their skills. There is no costume for the recital for this class. Dress: Black Leotard, tan/nude tights and shorts. Shoes: nude jazz shoes, foot undeez or turners. Hair pulled back. Maximum 6 students per class.

Learn popular Hip Hop moves as well as learn the fundamentals and history of Hip Hop dance. Express yourself and find your inner rhythm and funk in this fun filled class. LYRICAL – (Ages 6+)

Combines the technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom, fluidity and the expressive aspects of jazz and modern dance. Competition Lyrical A, B, C: Classes for students who are a part of GCAC’s Competition Dance Team. Students MUST audition to be a part of the dance team and must be in Ballet at least 1 year prior to joining the team. Dress: Black leotard, tan/nude tights and shorts or black pants. YOGA

YOGA – (Ages 6-9)

Yoga is an ancient healing practice known to calm the body, mind, and emotions. In this playful yoga children will learn yoga poses, breathing, and relaxation exercises which cultivate a calm mind, increase strength and flexibility, improve gross and fine motor skills, improve concentration, and give students tools to manage stress in their daily lives. No experience necessary. Maximum 8 students per class. The first three registrants will receive a FREE yoga mat courtesy of Neiman Marcus!

FUTURE IDOL – (Ages 10+)

(One year of vocal training or audition required)

Want to be a star or just look like one? If you’ve ever wanted to be like a singer you hear on TV then you will love this class. Can’t sing? Musicians of all kinds are welcome! Bring your guitar, sax or any instrument and help to create a magical performance. Students will learn the art of performing songs in various styles such as rock, R&B, folk and country. The instructor will help a young artist’s confidence in his/her ability to perform while reinforcing proper vocal technique. Private voice lessons may be taken with this class. Performance will be on the last day of class. Maximum 6 students per class.

An invitation to all Kings & Queens! Join our Knightclub and show off your moves! A complete understanding of chess rules required. ROBOTICS

LEVEL 1 – (Ages 7+)

Robot Mechanics & Engineering Design

Using VEX IQ kits, students will actively utilize the Engineering Design process as they develop robot models to participate in the challenge of the season. Students will engage in a series of guided challenges, culminating in a robot design of their own. Using simple programming, students will make their robots move autonomously to complete the challenge, including, navigating a maze, seeking and retrieving objects, and SUMO-bots. Use of your own tablet is suggested. We will assist in downloading programs. If you do not have a tablet, we will provide a laptop for use during the class time. Maximum 6 students per class.

LEVEL 2 – (Ages 9+)

Robotics Programming with Sensors Integration 

In this advanced course, students will learn programming concepts, flowchart development and programming documentation. Students will learn critical thinking, develop strategies for challenges presented and translate their thoughts into programming language (Scratch/Python-based).  They can evaluate their programs in the VEX VR interactive environment and later on their physical robots.

Through a curriculum that meets the next generation science standards, students will be engaged in authentic scientific experimentation, and energized to develop the skills to be successful in the 21st century. Our program has been developed in conjunction with Coast 2 Coast Robotics and offers small classes and personalized attention. Use of your own tablet is suggested. We will assist in downloading programs. If you do not have a tablet we will provide a laptop for use during the class time. Maximum 6 students per class.

FENCING

Placement is based on student’s level, assessed by instructor. All students will be provided with their own cleaned fencing garb to be used during class session.

Please note: It is very common for students to repeat fencing levels in order to gain the safe and proper technique needed to advance.

BEGINNER FENCING – (Ages 7-16)

We will start you on the path to enjoy this martial art with a foil. Expert instruction on protocol, safety, foundation footwork, attack, and parry-riposte. You will have the opportunity to fence with a partner at your level. Maximum 6 students per class.
