A LOOK INSIDE “THE NUMBER ON GREAT-GRANDPA’S ARM”: A conversation with Award-Winning Animator and Painter Jeff Scher. Moderated by Michael S. Glickman, Gold Coast Board Member.

Directed by Amy Schatz, and inspired by the book by David A. Adler (“The Number on My Grandfather’s Arm”), the Emmy-Award winning documentary film is a conversation between a boy and his great-grandfather, an Auschwitz survivor, interwoven with haunting historical footage, photos, and hand-painted watercolor animation by Jeff Scher. “The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm” is both a heartbreaking story of Jewish life in Eastern Europe before and during the Holocaust, and a heartwarming story of a bond that reaches across generations.

Jeff Scher combed through archival photographs and historical films of the Holocaust, shot by shot and frame by frame, to give life to the story of one of its survivors. With his use of the rotoscope technique, he is able to trace film footage frame by frame to give a realistic look to the animation. Scher won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for his production design for the documentary.
